The Backpack onboarding guide walks you through the steps to gather and organize your data in just a few minutes. As data is collected, your dedicated Backpack experts help integrate your existing processes and systems into one single, reliable source of truth for your portfolio.

  2. Site Visit

Backpack leverages a nationwide network of over 2,000 trained technicians, through our partnership with MasTec, to deliver consistent, high-quality on-site data collection.

Our field teams visit each property to document equipment, utility meters, and other building systems. We capture key details such as make, model, installation dates, and photos, and tag each asset with a QR code. Backpack conducts these site visits annually to keep your data current, accurate, and ready to support reliable, portfolio-wide insights.

  3. Enhance Connected Data

After the site visit, Backpack verifies and enhances your data, estimating equipment life, replacement costs, and organizing everything in your Backpack dashboard. This foundation supports reporting, compliance tracking, and capital planning. Additionally, this data verification—coupled with our annual site visits—assures your data is actionable and accurate year after year.

Common Questions

How does Backpack collect and verify building data?

We collect data in multiple ways—meeting you and your onsite teams where you are. From an in-software onboarding guide & questionnaire about the building all the way to white-glove support, we handle it all so you can focus on your daily work. Simply upload the information you have, and our team will verify & fill in the blanks through our site visit & data verification process.

What makes Backpack different from a typical software platform?

Backpack combines technology with hands-on expertise. Our team collects and verifies building data through on-site visits, enriches it with equipment insights, and helps you put it to work. Our equipment inventory helps you identify assets approaching the end of their estimated useful life, so you can plan replacements and budget ahead. Annual verification and ongoing professional support keep your information current and actionable for daily operations, compliance, and long-term planning. Plus, Backpack Rewards helps you earn cash back on eligible purchases from participating vendors, turning everyday spending into savings for your property.

Can Backpack integrate with our existing systems?

Yes, Backpack can integrate with Energy Star & other common software products. Where integration is not yet available, our team can talk about custom solutions to fit your specific needs.

What can we use Backpack data for?

Backpack data helps you make informed decisions across your property or portfolio.

  • Budgeting and capital planning: Use equipment age, estimated useful life, and replacement costs to prioritize investments and plan annual and long-term budgets. Analyze utility trends to forecast expenses, budget, and catch issues sooner.
  • Equipment replacement: Give vendors detailed equipment information and photos to support more informed bids. Export equipment lists to coordinate RFPs across a single property or your entire portfolio.
  • Backpack Rewards: Earn cash back on eligible purchases from participating vendors.
  • Operations: Review equipment performance and energy-use trends to troubleshoot issues, spot unusual consumption, and identify opportunities to reduce waste and operating costs.
  • Compliance and sustainability reporting: Track benchmarking requirements and deadlines, monitor greenhouse gas emissions, and export property and portfolio data to support reporting and disclosures.

How does Backpack keep building data up to date?

Backpack keeps building data current through annual site visits, automated utility bill collection from connected accounts, ongoing reviews, and the ability to update your data in real time. Our team verifies equipment inventories, documents new or replacement equipment, and reviews leasing information at least annually. Between visits, you can update equipment details in the platform or send changes to our team.
